Many Brazilians still don't know, but it's possible to find out if there is. forgotten PIS/PASEP values using only the CPF number. And the most curious thing is that, in many cases, the available balance can reach... thousands of reais, especially for those who worked with a formal employment contract between 1971 and 1988.

In recent years, the government has been updating consultation systems and expanding access to information, precisely to make life easier for those entitled to these funds. Today, it's possible to check your balance without having to wait in line at bank branches, with just a few clicks online.

Why is there still money sitting idle in the PIS/PASEP program?

THE PIS (Social Integration Program) and the PASEP (Public Servant's Asset Formation Program) They were created with the goal of guaranteeing a kind of savings for private sector workers and public servants. Until the end of the 1980s, companies and organizations made monthly contributions on behalf of their employees, forming an individual account.

Over time, these funds were forgotten, either because beneficiaries changed jobs, lost access to information, or simply didn't know they were entitled to them. Today, this money is the responsibility of... Federal Savings Bank, which unified the funds and offers digital means for consultation and withdrawal.

Many of these assets remain untouched, mainly due to a lack of awareness. There are cases of people who only discovered their balance decades later, and found considerable sums of money.

CPF lookup: the most practical way

The main way to find out if there is available balance is by using the CPF. The consultation can be done quickly, both online and in person. Caixa's system and government channels have been integrated to facilitate access.

With the CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID number) in hand, it's possible to find out if the worker has any outstanding amounts, if there have been previous withdrawals, or if the balance is awaiting release. This verification can also indicate if the benefit has been incorporated into... FGTS, which is what happens to some of the old balances.

This convenience is essential for those who don't remember their PIS or NIS number, since the CPF is the easiest piece of information to access, and also the most secure for cross-referencing official data.

Where to check your PIS/PASEP balance

The consultation can be done through various channels, both online and in person. The main ones are:

  • Caixa Econômica Federal app: Available for Android and iOS, it allows you to check if there is a balance in the name of the account holder linked to the CPF (Brazilian individual taxpayer registration number).
  • Caixa's official website: It also offers consultation using the CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID number), with secure and free access.
  • Digital Work Permit Application: Linked to the gov.br account, this app shows the employment history and benefits the worker may be entitled to.
  • Caixa branches: For those who prefer in-person service, it is possible to consult directly with an identification document and CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID).
  • ATM: With the Citizen Card, the inquiry can be made at Caixa's self-service terminals.

These options allow citizens to quickly find out if there are any amounts to be received, free of charge and with complete security.

The values that may be available

PIS/PASEP amounts vary considerably, as they depend on the contribution period and the deposits made by the employer at the time. There are people with... smaller balances, of a few hundred reais, and others with values exceeding R$ 5 thousand, due to monetary correction and interest accumulated over the years.

In many cases, beneficiaries have no idea they have this money. Older workers, already retired, or relatives of deceased individuals are the ones who most often find forgotten funds.

It's important to remember that money is individual and legal right of the worker or their heirs. It does not expire, meaning it is not lost over time.

Beware of fake consultations.

With the popularization of searches on the subject, fake websites and apps have emerged promising "faster" PIS/PASEP consultations. It is crucial to be careful: the consultation... It should only be done through official channels of Caixa Econômica Federal or the Federal Government..

Never provide your CPF (Brazilian tax identification number), date of birth, or other personal information through links from dubious sources. Ideally, always type the official website address into your browser or download apps directly from your phone's app store.

Who may be eligible and doesn't know it yet?

Even those who don't remember having formal employment between 1971 and 1988 can discover amounts owed to them. This is because many old contracts, especially short-term ones, generated automatic deposits.

Furthermore, public employees who contributed to PASEP may also have an outstanding balance. In the event of the account holder's death, immediate family members can claim the funds, presenting documents proving their relationship.

Many families only discovered the benefit after checking the deceased relative's CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID number), and were able to withdraw significant amounts of money that had been saved for decades.
