THE PIS/PASEP This is a very important benefit for millions of Brazilians, but many people still don't know if they are entitled to it or how to check their available balance. This process is simple, free, and can be done entirely online. If you want to find out if there is any forgotten money in your name, follow this complete and updated step-by-step guide.

What is PIS/PASEP?

PIS (Social Integration Program) is aimed at private sector workers, while PASEP (Public Servant's Asset Formation Program) is intended for public servants. Both were created to ensure that part of the resources collected by companies would be reverted into benefits for workers, such as the salary bonus and fund quotas.

Currently, PIS payments are managed by Caixa Econômica Federal, while PASEP payments are managed by Banco do Brasil. Although they function similarly, each has specific channels for checking and withdrawing funds.

Step 1# Have your documents ready.

First of all, it's important to gather some basic information. You will need your CPF (Brazilian Individual Taxpayer Registry), full name, date of birth, and, if possible, your PIS or NIS number (Social Identification Number). If you don't know this number, don't worry: you can easily find it through the app. Digital Work Card or on the portal My INSS. Both are integrated into the gov.br account.

Step 2# Find your PIS/NIT number

If you don't already have your PIS number written down, follow one of the steps below:

  • Digital Work CardDownload the app, log in with your gov.br account, and tap on the “Contracts” section. Your PIS number will appear alongside your employment records.
  • My INSSLog in using the same username and click on "My registration". There, you will find the NIT/PIS number linked to your CPF.
  • FGTS ApplicationThe number may also appear in the worker's personal data.

Another option is to call the Caixa Econômica Federal (0800 726 0207) and request the PIS number by providing the CPF and date of birth.

Step 3# Check if there are PIS/PASEP quotas to receive.

The quotas are funds deposited in the name of workers between 1971 and 1988. If you worked during this period or have relatives who did, there may be a balance available.

The consultation is done by gov.br portal, In the "Check PIS/PASEP quota balance" area, after logging in, the system shows if there is any amount to be redeemed. If the account holder has passed away, the heirs can also check and request the withdrawal, upon presentation of documents proving the family relationship.

Step 4# Check the salary bonus

The salary bonus is a benefit paid annually to workers who meet certain basic requirements:

  • To have worked at least 30 days in the base year with a formal employment contract;
  • Having received, on average, up to two minimum monthly wages;
  • To be registered with PIS/PASEP for at least five years;
  • Having the data correctly reported by the employer in RAIS or eSocial.

To find out if the bonus is available, access the app. Digital Work Card. Within the app, go to "Benefits" and tap on "Salary Bonus". The system will show you if you are eligible, the amount, and the payment date.

Private sector workers are paid by Federal Savings Bank, while public servants receive payment for Bank of Brazil.

Step 5# How to withdraw the amount

If the system indicates that there is a balance available, you can withdraw it in three different ways:

  • Through the Caixa Tem app, If the amount was deposited into a digital account.
  • At Caixa branches (PIS) or Bank of Brazil (PASEP), with official identification document.
  • At lottery outlets or ATMs., If there is a balance linked to your account.

In the event of the account holder's death, withdrawals can be made by heirs or dependents, upon presentation of a death certificate and documents proving kinship.

Step 6# Pay attention to deadlines

The salary bonus follows a payment schedule that changes each year. Typically, the funds are available for a few months, and if the withdrawal is not made within that timeframe, the money returns to the fund. PIS/PASEP quotas, on the other hand, are usually available indefinitely, but may require a specific procedure in cases of the account holder's death.

Therefore, it is important to check regularly so as not to lose the benefit due to lack of attention.
